In Nepal, the three Salesian communities which are registered as a Government recognized NGO, are heavily involved in the aftermath of the earthquake.
More than 4000 have died and hundreds of thousands are homeless. Supporting and assisting victims of the earthquake is the main priority of the Salesians in Nepal. Fr Jijo John, Director of Nepal Don Bosco Society is co-ordinating this relief operation. Working closely with Government officials and other NGO’s, the Salesians are already operational in areas with the highest casualties, in particular the worst hit districts of Sindhupalchok.
Salesian Teams are also working in two other severely affected villages: Sindhupalchowak and Ramachham. Truckloads of relief materials are being transported to the homeless.
Fr Jijo John has informed us that Don Bosco Nepal has been asked to co-ordinate with the village development committees to provide essential goods needed in each village including tent materials, rice, dal and other food items.
Salesian Missions Australia will direct donated funds to our Salesian partners in Nepal, to support this work.
After the relief effort concludes, surplus monies will be used for the education of needy girls and boys at the Don Bosco Schools in Siddihpur and Thecho, Kathmandu.
